The Leader of the Pack

"I love wolves. I love the wild side of life. I love your painting style, especially how you portray strong women. Can you paint me a wolf portrait?" Well, that was an awesome email to receive. Let me take a moment to think about it. YES!

Briefs like this are so interesting and I was delighted to collaborate and share different ideas with my client. I learnt so much about the folklore of wolves, including the alpha-females, and how they hold great importance and significance to several peoples and tribes, from the Eurasain Steppe, Ancient Greece and Persia, to the North American Plains.

Wolves are beautiful and revered animals, but do be careful of the ones who arrive dressed in sheep's clothing!

Alpha-Females are extremely protective of their pack, and I think this painting captures the very essence of that wild, yet controlled, and almost spiritual nature of this beautiful and incredible soul.

It was amazing to see this powerful woman framed and on my client’s wall. P.s. How fabulous is that colour of that paint.

Wolf goddesses were a big part of many cultures, and still are today.

Wild Inspiration - The Greek Artemis, who ruled the forest, the wildlife and the wolves; Cailleach, the Scottish Goddess who was a destroyer, but also a protector of wild animals including wolves; and Asena the she-wolf who became mother of the great Khans. These were just a few of the characters I discovered whilst doing research for this commission.

I love painting powerful woman, especially for my client who’s also a strong, beautiful and powerful woman too.
